GLBEC is the leading forum to address economic issues affecting the Great Lakes Bay Region. The GLBEC is a membership organization with members drawn from business, industry and finance. The purpose of the Club is to promote the study and discussion of social, economic and political questions. The Club has served as a major forum for discussion on a wide range of public issues of interest to business people.
GLBEC is proud of its founding tradition of presenting to its membership and the community, speakers and programs that inform, educate, and stimulate. It is the central intent that subjects considered to be primarily of an economic, business and financial content. We believe that economic issues, whether local, national or international, affect the lives of and are of vital importance to all informed citizens. It is the purpose of the club to encourage discussion and understanding, whether the topic is educational, informative, or a matter of public debate and controversial public opinion.
The club was organized in 1973 by Harrison Plum and Peter A. White. Originally founded as the Bay County Economics Club, the name was first changed in 1986 to include the tri-counties of Midland, Bay and Saginaw. Later in 2010, the name was changed to the Great Lakes Bay Economic Club. This was done in connection with a regional alliance that grew through the support of the Bay Area, Midland Area and Saginaw County Chambers of Commerce and Economic Development organizations that was formed to promote the region as an economical, viable community to grow business. The club is non-profit and non-partisan.
The club’s logo was adopted in 2010 in connection with the name change but remains representative of the community. The triangle represents the Bay, Midland, and Saginaw counties that make up the greater “Great Lakes Bay Region”, while the four circles represent the four factors of economic growth, labor, capital, raw materials, and ideas.
Membership in the club is open to all who have an interest in promoting discussion, debate and appropriate action on the economic issues of our time. Members include men and women in business and industry, in the professions, in labor, in government and education.
Luncheons, receptions, and other events are also designed for socializing and networking. GLBEC is nonpartisan, and takes no policy positions.
